Best and Worst Hospitals in NYC for Fall 2022

Medical errors remain the third leading cause of death in the United States. John Hopkins Medicine predicts over 250,000 patients die annually from mistakes made in medical settings. Sadly, most of these incidents are preventable with proper safety and health practices.
When medical errors lead to severe injuries and fatalities, hospitals must be held accountable. Not all medical centers value and promote the same high standards of health and safety as others. Patients deserve to know which hospitals do and which ones they should avoid for future treatments.
For over 20 years, The Leapfrog Group has provided patients with healthcare transparency to assist them in choosing the best medical center for their needs. The biannual Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades have significantly helped patients make educated decisions on their care while also giving medical facilities guidelines for improvement.
In this article, we’ll discuss how the grades are decided, where New York State ranked as a whole and how each hospital in New York City performed in the Fall 2022 survey.
Method of Determining Safety Grades
The goal of the Leapfrog Group Hospital Safety Grades is to give patients the information they need to make educated decisions about their care. To do this, Leapfrog assigns each participating facility a grade from A to F derived from scoring 28 hospital safety measures. These measures, proven to reduce patient injuries and fatalities, are categorized into five main groups:
- Problems with surgery
- Practices to prevent medical errors
- Safety problems
- Infection
- Doctors, nurses & hospital staff
Each measure is graded independently, showing specific areas where hospitals are thriving or struggling. Common safety measures graded include patient fall risk, accidents, cuts or tears, miscommunication about medication or discharge, unsafe medication administration, and more.
New York State Grade Fall 2022
Overall, New York has improved in the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades, rising from 44th to 39th from Spring to Fall 2022. Unfortunately, the percentage of A-rated hospitals did not improve, remaining at 12.7%. New York medical facilities still have a long way to go to meet the standards of the highest-rated states across the nation.
NYC Hospital Leapfrog Grades Fall 2022
New York City hospitals were slightly disappointing this year. Ten hospitals across the five boroughs received a D-rating this season, most of which are located in the Bronx and Brooklyn. Only five hospitals of the 44 hospitals received an A–rating, a stark result considering over 8.4 million residents in NYC would prefer treatment from an A-rated facility.
