Residents in New York are aware that the roadways could be the stage for tragedy. A fatal car accident could occur abruptly, especially when a driver fails to comply with the rules of the road. A negligent driver could seriously affect another driver, passenger or bystander. An innocent victim could suffer greatly and the crash could result in serious injuries or even death.
Authorities in Ithaca recently responded to a fatal truck accident that involved a tractor-trailer and a patron of an Upstate New York restaurant. The accident occurred around 4 p.m. when the truck hauling car crashed into the restraint and caused part of the historic building to collapse.
Authorities announced that a person suffered fatal injuries while four others were injured with non-life threatening injuries. It is not clear at this time whether the individual killed in the collision was inside the restaurant or a pedestrian outside of the building. Furthermore, officers are still investigating the crash and the driver of the tractor-trailer is cooperating with the investigation. No charges have been filed at this time.
When a driver is at fault for a serious or fatal accident, they could face civil liabilities. A wrongful death claim could be filed by loved ones of the deceased in order to offset the expenses caused by the crash such as medical bills, funeral costs, lost wages and damages. Those injured could also seek compensation by filing a personal injury claim. This could cover the bills and damages associated with the incident.
An accident could happen suddenly and end tragically, especially when they involve a tractor-trailer or semi-truck. These massive vehicles could cause much damage as well as injuries and death. Whether the driver is fatigued, under the influence or distracted, those affected by a negligent driver could have a cause of action. Seeking advice could help guide the individual or their loved ones through the process while protecting their rights and interests.
