Construction Worker Fatality in Brooklyn Heights Fall

Sadly, a New York City construction worker was killed on Friday morning after a tragic fall on a worksite in Brooklyn Heights. According to Brownstoner, authorities received a call around 10:20 am about a worker found unconscious on a second-floor terrace of a dorm building under construction at 124 Columbia Heights. Witnesses reported seeing the worker fall from the eighth floor of the 10-story building. Unfortunately, there was no adequate fall protection installed near the worker, and he was not wearing a harness at the time of the fall. 

The NYC Department Buildings and Office of Administrative Trials and Hearings stated that while the project has all required active permits for construction, there have been several complaints directed towards the worksite since beginning in July 2020. Reports found at least 17 complaints filed citing worker safety concerns, three of which were dismissed. At least one violation, filed in November of 2021, resulted in a $10,000 violation for “failure to safeguard all persons and property affected by construction operations.” Construction accidents are entirely preventable when companies implement precautionary measures to protect workers from harm.
