Construction Worker Seriously Injured in Brooklyn Accident

Sadly, a construction worker sustained serious injuries on Monday in Brooklyn. News12 Long Island reported the accident occurred at a worksite on 8th Avenue and President Street around 8:45 am in Park Slope. First responders reported pulling the construction worker from a hole he fell in before transporting him to the hospital.

Investigations into the accident and what caused it are still taking place. The construction worker remains in serious condition. We wish this individual a quick and complete recovery.

Falls Are the Leading Cause of Construction Injuries

Falls have been the leading cause of construction injuries and fatalities for years. In 2021, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) not only reported that fall injuries were at the top of the annual Fatal Four report, but that negligent fall protection was the leading violation during worksite inspections on the Top 10 Frequently Violated Standards

Also in 2021, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported 370 fatal construction injuries due to falls, an increase of 7.2% from the prior year. The most common causes of falls in construction include:

  • Unstable walkways
  • Dangerous stairways
  • Scaffolding collapses
  • Absence of fall protection (guardrails, signage, harnesses)
  • Slippery surfaces
