1 Worker Killed and 3 Injured In Construction Wall Collapse

A construction worker in Manhattan was killed on Tuesday, and three others were injured when a wall collapsed at a demolition site in SoHo. According to ABC News, the workers were on the second floor of the building when the wall collapsed. First responders reported that one worker sustained fatal injuries from being trapped under debris, while three others were injured from falling on or around the debris.ย

The Department of Buildings (DOB) engineers and inspectors were called to the demolition site located at 126 Lafayette St. after reports were made about the collapse. Initial investigations determined the wall collapse occurred due to an overload of construction material in the building that caused the floor beam to fail.

The demolition site had previously been issued a partial stop-work order for five safety violations, including:ย ย

  • Failure to fireproof construction shanty.
  • Failure to remove fixtures and hazardous material prior to demolition.ย
  • Removal of sprinklers from the building.ย
  • Unsafe placement of scaffold tarps.ย
  • Overloading the first floor with 50 tons of construction material.ย

Three days after the violations were issued, the DOB confirmed that all safety concerns had been resolved. Further investigations into why the wall collapsed at the demolition site continue.ย
