Drunk Driving Detection Systems Could Save Lives

By 2026, American automakers could be required to install drunk driving detection features inside standard car safety systems. In a recent article by The New York Times, the new technology would detect if a driver was impaired based on monitoring the driverโ€™s road behaviors. Using intelligent braking systems, certain vehicle operations would be off-limits if the driver appears intoxicated.

Alcohol consumption is a leading cause of fatal car accidents on American roads. According to an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety study, more than 9,000 people are killed in drunk driving accidents every year. Intoxicated drivers have poor judgment and attempt aggressive maneuvers that allow serious accidents to occur. With the new prosed drunk driving technology, these dangerous behaviors could be prevented and possibly save thousands of lives.
